Deadwood TV Movie Finally Greenlit By HBO

After years of rumors and speculation, HBO has officially confirmed that its fan-favorite Western series Deadwood will be getting a feature-length revival.

While at a Television Critics Association (TCA) press meeting, HBO President Casey Bloys revealed that the Deadwood film is scheduled to begin principal photography in October. While no official release date for the upcoming film, Bloys expects the revival to air sometime in spring 2019.

Deadwood originally ran on HBO for three seasons from 2004 to 2006, met with universal acclaim for its performances and writing drawing heavily from actual historical events taking place in the South Dakota frontier town. While the series went on to win eight Emmy Awards during its run, it was cancelled by the network citing low ratings and high production costs to faithfully recreate its Western setting. Series creator and showrunner David Milch had pitched two television films to HBO after its cancellation to close out the series though they were not picked up by the network initially though HBO indicated the project would move forward in early 2016.

Details on the upcoming revival are still unclear, particularly in regards to which cast members will return and what the story for the continuation will entail.

Directed by Dan Minahan from a script written by series creator David Milch, Deadwood begins filming this October for a 2019 release.
