Miami Vice will soon return to television screens courtesy of Vin Diesel. Diesel will executive produce the revival, which has been in the works for months at Universal Television and is slated to air on the NBC network – the same network the show originally debuted on back in 1984.

The original Miami Vice series ran for five season on NBC, from 1984 to 1989, and starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, undercover detectives working for the Miami Metro-Dade Police Department. The series was notable for its unique visuals and use of music, which was heavily integrated into the show’s onscreen action. Miami Vice took home four Emmy awards in 1985.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the Miami Vice reboot is being headed by Shana Waterman, head of television at One Race Television, Diesel’s production company. The project will see Diesel reteam with Chris Morgan, the screenwriter behind every Fast and Furious film since The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Peter Macmanus, the screenwriter behind The Mist television series, is slated to write the show’s script.

The Miami Vice revival is the result of a personal plea from Diesel made to NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke. The franchise was rebooted once before by Michael Mann in 2006 for a film that starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
