Lee is best known for co-creating popular comic book franchises like Fantastic FourSpider-Man and X-Men with legendary artists including Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. At the age of 94, he hasn’t retired or even slowed down. Lee continues to work in Los Angeles at his office with POW! Entertainment, where he masterminds new films and television projects. His most recent work includes UK sci-fi crime seriesStan Lee’s Lucky Man.

Lee went from writer to publisher in 1972, before moving to Los Angeles as part of Marvel’s TV and movie initiative in 1981. He joined Gill Champion at POW! Entertainment in 2000, where he has remained ever since. There, he generates ideas, which are then presented to a team of writers to develop for TV and comics.

“The super[hero] angle is the thing that’s fiction, but I tried to make everything else as realistic as possible,” Lee shared. “I try to think that if I had a superpower, what would my life be like?”

“They were not gods come down from the heavens,” added Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. “We recognize ourselves in them, and in their struggle to do what’s right.”

Lee has also appeared in the films based off his Marvel Comics properties. From Iron Man to Spider-Man: Homecoming, he has popped up in over a dozen cameo roles, though his Thor cameo is his personal favorite. “It’s the only cameo that I’ve done that was two scenes. Now I’m hoping they’ll give me three scenes. Before you know it, I’ll be one of the actors in the movie,” he joked in an interview last month.

“I love what I do,” Lee said. “If I had to do anything else, I’d be miserable. If I weren’t coming into the office and working with the people [at POW! Entertainment], I would be sitting at home, watching television.”
