BEFORE ACCEPTING BATGIRL GIG, JOSS WHEDON CALLED MARVEL

Warner Bros. shocked fans by not only announcing plans for an unexpected “Batgirl” standalone film as part of the DC Extended Universe, but by also revealing that Joss Whedon would is reportedly in talks to write, direct and produce the film.

The filmmaker wrote and directed “Marvel’s The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” along with consulting for Marvel Studios, so seeing him jump to the “competition” at DC Entertainment was a lot for some fans to wrap their heads around. As it turns out, Whedon reached out to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige before the news broke.

“He called. A couple months ago, which he didn’t have to do and was super cool of him and super nice of him,” Feige told The Hollywood Reporter. “And we couldn’t be more supportive. We want to see a Joss Whedon ‘Batgirl’ film be awesome.”

As it appears there are no hard feelings between Whedon and Feige, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that somewhere down the line Whedon will find himself back behind the camera for another Marvel Studios film, unless decide he prefers to work in the DCEU. Either way, fans will make out as the real winners.

Having kicked off in 2013’s “Man of Steel,” the DCEU continued on the big-screen with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” in 2016. After “Wonder Woman,” the saga will continue in “Justice League,” “Aquaman,” “The Flash,” “Cyborg” and “Green Lantern Corps,” spotlighting the rest of DC’s flagship heroes. In addition to “Batgirl,”, there’s a “Suicide Squad” sequel in development, along with a “Gotham City Sirens” film — set to spotlight the villainous trio of Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Catwoman — a Matt Reeves-directed “Batman” solo film and a “Shazam” movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Black Adam.
