THE MAN FROM UNCLE SEQUEL IS IN THE WORKS

Bringing together stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer for an action-packed movie adaptation of a popular 1960s spy-fi series under the direction of Guy Ritchie probably seemed like a recipe for success. Yet, Warner Bros.’ “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” opened in 2015 to decidedly mixed reviews, and ultimately earned just $109.8 million worldwide.

Conventional wisdom would suggest that single film would be the last we see of Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin for a while, at least until someone could sell the studio on a reboot. However, it appears co-writer and producer Lionel Wigram is already hard at work on the script for “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” sequel.

“I called Lionel Wigram, the producer of the movie, and he and Guy produced it and wrote it all together,” Hammer told Slashfilm. “I was like, ‘Dude, what’s the deal? I get asked about this shit all the time. Can you just write a sequel?’ He was like, ‘You know what? Yeah, fuck it, I’ll do it. Sure, I’ll write a sequel.’ I was like, ‘If you write one, I’m sure we can get one made,’ so who knows? Today is the first day I’ve actually told anyone that story. I only told one other person who asked. Apparently, the sequel is being written right now. No pressure, Lionel!”

Mind you, there’s a lot of territory to cover between writing a sequel and actually producingone. But Wigram certainly has a lot of clout at Warner Bros., having served as an executive producer on four “Harry Potter” and a producer on “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” He’s also collaborated with Ritchie on the “Sherlock Holmes” franchise and the upcoming “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.”

If anyone can get a green light for “The Man From U.N.C.L.E. 2,” it’s probably Wigram and Ritchie.
