Cress Williams’ “Black Lightning” is here! The CW has released the first look at their latest superhero Jefferson Pierce, aka Black Lightning, in a new character poster.

“I knew way too much about the world as a young boy growing up in Richmond, California. I was no stranger to violence, death, hopelessness or the feeling that no one cared about what was happening in my life,” shared Salim Akil, who will act as executive producer, writer and director on the series. “Comics were a great way for me to escape. I was about 13 when ‘Black Lightning’ was created, and finally there was a Black Super Hero that gave a damn about our neighborhood and our lives.”

“Resurrecting him at a time in our society when a sense of hope is lacking… ‘Black Lightning’ will be that hope,” he added. “And in updating the suit, it will signal to a new generation that it’s time to harness and release our power, and become our own superheroes.”

The suit was designed by Costume Designers Guild Award nominee Laura Jean Shannon, whose past credits include “The Jungle Book,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” “Blade: Trinity,” “Iron Man” and more.

Despite sharing a producer in Greg Berlanti, Fox’s “Black Lightning” won’t cross over with the Arrow-verse shows airing on The CW. In January, Berlanti said that if “Black Lightning” exists, he doubts the character will team up with any other heroes. “I don’t think so,” Berlanti said at the time. “If we’re lucky enough that that exists, that that show exists, I don’t think those worlds will cross over.” However, seeing as the pilot has just shifted from Fox to The CW and the same was said about “Supergirl,” it’s hard to rule anything out.

Berlanti will produce alongside Salim and Mara Brock Aki, who have worked on shows such as “The Game” and “Being Mary Jane.” Production is currently underway in Atlanta.

According to the series synopsis,

Black Lightning centers on Jefferson Pierce. He made his choice: He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.

Black Lightning was created in 1977 by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden. The hero was DC Comics’ first major African-American superhero and has served as a member of Batman’s Outsiders and the Justice League.

In addition to Williams, “Black Lightning” stars Christine Adams as Jefferson Pierce’s ex-wife Lynn and Nafessa Williams and China Anne McClain as their daughters Jennifer Pierce (aka Lightning) and Anissa Pierce (aka Thunder).
