Back in the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man days – remember those? – Sony had plans for villain spinoffs focusing on the Sinister Six and Venom.

Now that the web crawler is back within Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (Spider-Man: Homecoming is due out this summer), we thought those dreams were scrapped. But Venom was announced last week (it’ll open in October, 2018).

Now comes word that moviegoers are going to get an R rated treatment on the Marvel villain. And if that’s not enough for you, Collider reports that Venom will kickstart Sony’s own, separate Marvel universe that will include Black Cat and Silver Sable films.

In addition to Spider-Man, the company owns several hundred Marvel characters, and while they are eager to have Peter Parker hobnobbing alongside Tony Stark, Sony clearly wants to create something that stands outside of the MCU.

Venom, a character that was introduced in the 1980s, is an alien “symbiote” that bonds with its human hosts giving them superpowers.

One big question mark is whether current Spidey, Tom Holland, will appear.

Variety caught up with the actor and his answer was predictably vague.

“I have no idea,” Holland said. “I haven’t read a script. I haven’t seen any sort of concept art, so that would be something I would decide on when I see material.”

But Homecoming director Jon Watts says that Venom is not connected to his feature.

“That’s really intriguing,” he told Fandango. “I don’t know anything about it. It’s not connected, so there’s not that overlap.”

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theatres July 7.
