Beloved comedian Billy Connolly left viewers in tears as he made a heartfelt appeal for donations on Comic Relief.
The 74-year-old was speaking about a charity which supports people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

But it was the funnyman himself who looked frail as he continues to battle a number of health problems.

Never one to feel sorry for himself, Connolly admitted as much with a typically witty opening remark.

“Hello, Billy Connolly here asking for your cash,” he said.

“Not for me obviously. I’ve got cancer and Parkinson’s and I definitely need a haircut but no…”

Connolly’s bravery in supporting the appeal was one of the main talking points of Comic Relief.

Presenter Dan Walker wrote: “There are very few people who can make you laugh & cry at the same time. Billy Connolly is a rare diamond”

“Billy Connolly looking so frail and yet appealing on behalf of others on Comic Relief was pretty moving just then,” wrote another viewer.20 SLIDES © Evan Agostini/Invision/AP Images

Glaswegian legend Connolly was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013 but has continued to work and recently announced a tour of England and Wales for later this year.

The stand-up recently revealed how continuing to work helped him cope with the symptoms.

He said: “It’s a miracle. I think science should study it. I’ve gone on stage sick and come off better.  “And then the minute it’s finished, you get sick as if your illnesses are all waiting to happen.

“The Parkinson’s just rolls along singing a song. So I keep trying to find lighter things to say about it, because they notice I’ve got it.

“I walk differently than I used to and I don’t move as much onstage as I used to.

“I just point out the darker side of it, like banning Jerry Lee Lewis from the house ’cause he sings ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’.”

Connolly, who is married to therapist Pamela Stephenson, recently sold his swanky Manhattan loft apartment for £3.5 million.

He is moving back to Los Angeles as he wants to live in a warmer climate.
