Michael Peña’s portrayal of Luis in Marvel’s “Ant-Man” adaptation brought a sense of real world levity to the otherwise wacky superhero action movie about a man who can punch harder when he becomes very small. Luis played a pivotal role in the original film’s heist sequence, helping Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), the new Ant-Man, to infiltrate Pym Technologies to steal a deadly, experimental weapon. That sequence, piled atop some smaller moments between Rudd and Peña, netted the character a vocal and devoted fan favorite following. Luckily for those on team Luis, Peña will be reprising his role for the sequel.

“So, I’m doing ‘Extinction’ next, that’s a Universal movie,” Peña said in an interview with LRM Online. “And then I’m doing Ant-Man, Part 2.”

The news will likely come as a relief to many, as Pena wasn’t always so sure he would be returning for “Ant-Man and the Wasp.” The sequel has had other major characters locked in as returning for some time now, including Michael Douglas as Hank Pym and Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, but news on supporting character has been more nebulous. In a recent interview, published just yesterday, Peña said he had yet to receive a call from Marvel Studios. Apparently, a lot can happen overnight in the wooly world of Hollywood blockbusters.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” is scheduled to begin filming this summer and will see the major characters from the original films reprising their starring roles. Little is known about the plot of the film itself, but the post-credits sequence in “Ant-Man” hinted at Hope Van Dyne donning the superhero costume of her mother, Janet van Dyne, the Wasp.

First introduced in “Tales to Astonish” #44, Janet convinced Hank Pym, who had already unraveled the mysteries of the Pym particle and become the superhero Ant-Man, to help her slay the interdimensional monster that killed her father. Pym agreed and produced a costume for her that would allow Janet to reduce in size and shoot fireballs while shrunk. Thus, the Wasp was born. Janet would go on to become one of the founding members of the Avengers, and is even credited with naming the iconic super team.

Debuting in theaters July 6, 2018, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is a production of Marvel Studios directed by Peyton Reed and starring Evangeline Lilly, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Michael Pena and Michael Douglas.
