The world is turned upside down in an eye-catching — and vertigo-inducing — new poster for the long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower.” The image, which apparently had leaked earlier, was made official this morning by a tweet from the author.

Sporting the tagline “There Are Other Worlds Than These,” the poster provides an unusual perspective on New York City buildings, with the negative space creating the shape of the Dark Tower itself.

Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, the ambitious adaptation of King’s sprawling fantasy epic follows 11-year-old Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), who uncovers clues about another dimension, and is whisked away to Mid-World. There, he meets Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), a lone frontiersman knight on a quest to reach the Dark Tower and save Mid-World. However, an ageless sorcerer (Matthew McConaughey) and assorted monsters stand in his way.

Long in development, “The Dark Tower” isn’t a direct adaptation of King’s 1982 novel “The Gunslinger,” but rather, in the author’s words, it begins “in media res, in the middle of the story instead of at the beginning.” The larger plan calls for a big-screen trilogy, with interlocking television miniseries.

Set to arrive July 28, “The Dark Tower” also stars Abbey Lee, Katheryn Winnick, Fran Kranz, Claudia Kim and Jackie Earle Haley.
