Although “Kong: Skull Island” unseated “Logan” in the North American box office, the Hugh Jackman film is now the highest-grossing global release of 2017 with an estimated $438.3 million. “Fifty Shades Darker” is a distant second with $368.8 million.

The Fox sequel added $37.9 million domestically to its coffers this weekend, pushing its U.S. tally past $152 million in just 10 days of release. That means “Logan” will quickly pass “The LEGO Batman Movie” and its $159 million to become the top-earning North American release of the year. However, as Box Office Mojo notes, that honor will be short-lived, as Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” arrives in theaters on Friday.

After just two weekends in theaters “Logan” can already claim the highest-grossing worldwide release of the three Wolverine films. Within the X-Men franchise it now rests at No. 5, behind “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “X-Men: Apocalypse,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and, the reigning champion, “Deadpool.” “Logan” doesn’t open in Japan until June 1.

The farewell of Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart to the X-Men franchise, “Logan” is set in the near future, years after the epilogue of 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” In it, a weary Logan, whose healing factor is failing, cares for an ailing Professor X in a hideout on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces.

In theaters nationwide, director James Mangold’s “Logan” stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Dafne Keen and Stephen Merchant.
