THOR GETS AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT & A NEW LOOK IN RAGNAROK

The God of Thunder is getting a haircut — but it’s not just star Chris Hemsworth who is getting a makeover, as revealed by Entertainment Weekly. “Thor: Ragnarok,” the third solo “Thor” adventure, is getting a lighter tone thanks to director Taika Waititi, who rose to prominence with his vampire mockumentary “What We Do in the Shadows.”

“Taika has such a quirky, left-of-field sense of humor, which forced all the characters and the tone of the whole story to head in a new direction,” explained Hemsworth. “Each day we were like, ‘Are we pushing it too far? Are we allowed to have this much fun?’”

Director Waititi was quick to calm any fears that the Thor’s new outing will degenerate into a screwball comedy, saying, “I think sometimes people mistake a tonal shift as ‘We’re just going to make some ridiculous broad comedy where no one gives a s— what happens and everyone gets stoned and sits around talking about saving the universe.’”

“We want people to care what happens and care that the hero succeeds,” he added. “I think tonally it’s like a slight shift. I don’t feel nervous — I feel good about it.”

Despite the lighter approach, Thor is taking on a couple of heavyweights in the upcoming three-quel. Not only is he squaring off against his fellow Avenger the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), he is is also taking on the Goddess of Death, Hela, as played by Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett.

After centuries of imprisonment, Hela escapes and attacks Thor, banishing him to the planet Saakar, where he is forced to battle for his life in gladiatorial combat. The number one fighter is — you guessed it — the Hulk, in an echo of Marvel’s popular 2006 “Planet Hulk” storyline.

Hemsworth also mused about the benefits of his new look. “It was nice not to have to sit in the makeup chair for that hour each morning. It felt like a rebirth for me as the actor but also as the character,” he shared.

Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban and Mark Ruffalo, “Thor: Ragnarok” hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
