Deadpool 2: Rob Liefeld Wants Russell Crowe to Read For Cable

The credits had no sooner rolled on “Deadpool” than audiences were speculating about the sequel, and who would play fan-favorite Marvel Comics antihero Cable. Several names have been thrown around, Kyle Chandler to Pierce Brosnan, but the character’s co-creator has his own idea.

Early Friday, Rob Liefeld tweeted a request for Oscar winner Russell Crowe to read for the role in “Deadpool 2” and the planned X-Force film.

Hours later, Crowe responded in an exchange that is already sparking online speculation.

Note to self, don’t caffeine tweet @russellcrowe before nodding off to sleep.

Of course, much of this can be seen as just playful banter, but knowing Liefeld’s history, it wouldn’t be shocking if he truly wanted Crowe to portray Cable.

Although best known for his roles in such films as “Gladiator,” “L.A. Confidential” and “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” Crowe is of course no stranger to superhero movies: He played Superman’s father Jor-El in 2013’s “Man of Steel.”

Directed by David Leitch (“John Wick”), the “Deadpool” sequel will once again star Ryan Reynolds, joined (so far) by Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder and, presumably, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus. The film is targeted for release on Jan. 2, 2018.
