Uma Thurman Expresses Regret Over Turning Down ‘Lord Of The Rings’ Role

With critical acclaim, a legion of fans and even an Academy Award for Best Picture given to it final entry, it can difficult to fathom the notion of someone turning down a role in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. However, that is exactly what Kill Bill star Uma Thurman did when she was offered the chance to portray one of the film’s few female characters. In an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Thurman revealed that she had turned down the role of Eowyn and expressed her regret over the decision.

Host Stephen Colbert asked Thurman if she had in fact turned down the role of Eowyn, the noblewoman of and warrior of Rohan. Thurman confirmed his discovery, offering an understandable explanation to a perplexed Colbert.

“It was a very long time ago and I do consider it one of the worst decisions ever made, but I just had my first child and I was a little housebound.”

Colbert asked if she did not want to bring her newborn child to New Zealand, where the trilogy was filmed, for three years. Thurman agreed with Colbert’s assessment but added:

“It’s really definitely a regret.”

The role of Eowyn eventually went to actress Miranda Otto.

Colbert himself, a notable Lord of the Rings fan, had a cameo appearance in one of Peter Jackson’s subsequent film adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien’s book titled The Hobbit.
