David Fincher Reportedly ‘Very Interested’ In Directing ‘World War Z 2’

Yesterday, Paramount Pictures pulled World War Z 2 from its calendar leaving the project without a release date. The film was expected to be delayed after director J.A. Bayona exited the project last summer having not being given enough time to prep and now it seems the picture may not see the light of day until 2018 or even as far back as 2019.

David Fincher has been rumored to be considering the project and is “very creatively interested in directing the movie” according to a source close to The Hollywood Reporter. Insiders say the hold-up is for budget reasons but not the kind you’d expect. Fincher is interested in telling a more human story, focusing the film on a man and his family navigating the world during the zombie apocalypse for less than the $190 million dollar original.

“He really would like to do it. It’s up to Paramount,” a source of Fincher’s interest told THR.

While Fincher’s talents would certainly produce a much more sophisticated feature than the 2013 hit –which grossed $540 million at the global box office — Paramount Chief Brad Grey isn’t ready to scale things back for the blockbuster sequel. Sources close to Variety said Paramount is looking for some extra time to further develop the script which was originally written by Steven Knight (Burnt).

Ultimately Paramount is going to make the film they want to make. Until now, the studio leaving the sequel without a release date might be for the best as the original film itself called for extensive reshoots after the third act of the film failed to test well with audiences. Although the film managed a hefty take financially, it barely broke even for the studio.

Pitt is attached to star and produce the film with Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner as well as Skydance’s David Ellison.
