I don’t normally post about movie rankings but the fact that “Split” not only did well but surpassed what should have been an ‘expected’ number 1 action franchise gives me  hope that the outside world still yearns for something different and more cerebral. Plus, I am not upset to See M. Night march forward to restoring his much established credibility as a maker of good films.  REC

Weekend Box Office Update: ‘Split’ Dominates ‘xXx: Xander Cage’

The first film in the xXX franchise debuted in 2002 and opened with $44.5M, the sequel followed up with Ice Cube at the helm. Return of Xander Cage will see earnings that are 56% less compared to the original.

M. Night Shyamalan is continuing his success with Split, which is now the 4th best opening for Shyamalan behind Signs and The Village. James McAvoy has been earned praise for his performance in the film, playing a character that has 23 different personalities. Split opened on 3,015 theaters.

In additional box office news, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has passed $1 billion after its box office run this weekend. The Star Wars spin-off film reached this milestone after earning an additional $7 million domestically over the past three days. Rogue One has earned $512.2 million domestically since it was released in December.

The third explosive chapter of the blockbuster franchise that redefined the spy thriller finds extreme athlete turned government operative Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) coming out of self-imposed exile and on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang and his team in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box. Recruiting an all-new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself enmeshed in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of world governments. Packed with the series’ signature deadpan wit and bad-ass attitude, “xXx: RETURN OF XANDER CAGE” will raise the bar on extreme action with some of the most mind-blowing stunts to ever be caught on film.

Directed by D. J. Caruso, xXx: Return of Xander Cage stars Vin Diesel, Ruby Rose, Donnie Yen, Toni Collette, Nicky Jam, Tony Jaa, Neymar Jr., Deepika Padukone, Kris Wu, Nina Dobrev, Rory McCann, Michael Bisping and Samuel L. Jackson.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage is now playing in theaters.
