NBC Developing ‘Witchblade’ TV Series

The comic book genre has grown on television over the past few years with both DC and Marvel, but it looks like Image Comics is joining the party too with their Witchblade property. Comicbook.com revealed today that NBC and Sony Pictures TV are currently developing a series based on Sara Pezzini. The project is only in development stages at this point. The Vampire Diaries’ Caroline Dries will be writing the pilot script and serve as an executive producer on the show with fellow TVD writer Brian Young.

An official description for the project was provided and reads as follows:

“Homicide detective Sara Pezzini is on the hunt for an elusive serial killer. Pezzini must navigate the grisly streets and police politics of San Francisco’s Mission District—until one day the bracelet she has worn her entire life gives her supernatural insight into a crime she’s trying to solve. Her bracelet is the Witchblade, an amulet that has been worn by remarkable women throughout history, and Sara is next in line.”

Carol Mendelsohn Productions’ Julie Weitz and Mendelsohn will also be involved, as well as Top Cow’s Marc Silvestri and Matt Hawkins. Rick Jacobs from Circle of Confusion is also joining the series as an executive producer. This would mark as the second TV take on Witchblade as TNT had a show based on the graphic novel back in 2001 for two seasons.

Should the show move forward and get picked up to series, it would most likely be aimed for the 2017-2018 TV Season. If Witchblade ends up happening, it would join the recently renewed comic book shows, Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. Over at ABC, they have the upcoming The Inhumans series which will premiere at the end of September with its 8-epsiode season. FOX is closing in on giving Matt Nix’s untitled X-MenTV show a pilot order.
