Matt Ryan Returns As Constantine in New Animated Series

Although it may not be exactly what “Constantine” fans were hoping for, Matt Ryan will return to the role of the occult detective — in an animated series. Perhaps this is the DC Comics television announcement Geoff Johns teased a week ago.

Revealed today during The CW’s presentation at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, the animated “Constantine” will stream on the CW Seed, home to “Vixen” and the upcoming “Freedom Fighters: The Ray.” According to Deadline, five or six 10-minute episodes have been ordered.

“Constantine” will be executive produced by Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Supergirl”) and written by David S. Goyer, the latter of whom helped to develop the live-action series.

Ryan debuted as John Constantine in 2015 on NBC’s live-action television series based on the DC Comics/Vertigo character. Although it was well-received by fans, the supernatural drama was canceled after just 13 episodes. The actor reprised his role on an episode of “Arrow,” fueling hopes that “Constantine” might find a new home on The CW. This animated version may serve as some consolation for disappointed fans.

Constantine has fared well lately in animated form, with Ryan voicing the character in Warner Bros. Animation’s direct-to-DVD movie “Justice League Dark,” and Damian O’Hare stepping into the role of Cartoon Network’s new series “Justice League Action.”

The “Constantine” news arrives on the heels of The CW’s renewal of its DC superhero lineup, “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow.”

No premiere date has been announced for the animated “Constantine.”
