The Dark Tower’: Meet Roland & Jake In This New Image From The Upcoming Stephen King Adaptation

I really want this to be good as so much hinges upon it…considering the exceptional source material. Here’s hoping. REC

We are entering a new age of Stephen King adaptations. 2017 brings two of his most iconic books to the screens – the monster clown story It and the author’s magnum opus, a multiverse-spanning fantasy epic titled The Dark Tower. After heavyweights like J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard tried and failed to bring the sprawling tale to the big (and small) screen, the first film in a planned series about a lone gunslinger (Idris Elba) and his quest for the titular structure is set for a blockbuster release next summer. While we wait for a trailer (outside of leaks), Sony, the studio behind the film, released a festive new image from the upcoming movie. Check it out below.

In the new world of cinematic universes, King’s work remains a great, untapped resource, despite the glut of subpar adaptations that litter the Hollywood landscape. The Dark Tower sits at the center of the author’s storytelling literally and figuratively, unifying his many, many books into a larger meta-narrative. If all the rights were in one place a la Marvel Studios, a cohesive Stephen King cinematic universe would be just as deep as those of the Marvel and DC superheroes. For now, us King acolytes (of which many up-and-coming filmmakers in Hollywood are. Hello Stranger Things!) will have to console ourselves with King adaptations that actually live up to their source material for once.

The Dark Tower hits theaters July 28, 2017.
