Lionsgate has found a new director for its “Highlander” reboot in Chad Stahelski, who previously directed “John Wick” alongside David Leitch. Stahelski is the latest director to join the project, which was originally announced in 2008 and has lingered in production ever since. Directors such as Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (“28 Weeks Later”) and Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) had previously signed on to direct, and stars such as Ryan Reynolds and Dave Bautista were floated for the cast.

It’s unclear hat Stahleski’s incarnation of “Highlander” will look like at this time, as the hunt for writers and cast members is still on, but he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about some of his favorite elements from the original. He said, “I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school. Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”

In the 1986 original “Highlander,” the immortal swordsman Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) faces the evil Kurgan (Clancy Brown) to see who will be the last immortal left standing; “there can be only one,” after all. Four sequels and three television series followed.

Stahleski recently wrapped shooting on “John Wick: Chapter 2,” which he is directing solo. That film is due out in theaters on February 10, 2017. The “Highlander” reboot does not yet have a release date.
