CBS CEO On Why ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Wouldn’t Work On Broadcast TV

Star Trek fans have had quite the year with the Star Trek: Discovery TV series that is coming to CBS All Access next year. Originally planned to premiere on the digital platform in early 2017, the show got pushed back to May 2017 instead. There was also the announcement that Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) would no longer be the show-runner on the series due to previous commitment to other shows he is working on.

While no new updates on the show has come out recently, a new interview with CBS Interactive CEO, Jim Lanzone, reveals why the show wasn’t put on CBS or a broadcast network. When speaking with Recode Media, Lanzone explained why he doesn’t think Discovery would work on broadcast television.

“Sci-fi is not something that has traditionally done really well on broadcast. It’s not impossible, for the future, if somebody figures it out. But historically, a show like ‘Star Trek’ wouldn’t necessarily be a broadcast show, at this point.”

“Set 10 years before the events of the original Star Trek series, the series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they discover new worlds and civilizations, while exploring the franchise’s signature contemporary themes. The season-long storyline revolves around “an incident and an event in Star Trek history that’s been talked about but never been explored.”

Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery, which consists of 13 episodes, will premiere sometime in May 2017 on CBS All Access, and will stream on Netflix worldwide with new episodes the day after the US release.
