Fox has renewed “The Simpsons” for its 29th and 30th seasons, which will bring the animated comedy to 669 episodes, breaking the previous record for a scripted show set by “Gunsmoke.”

“This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series,” Dana Walden and Gary Newman, chairmen and CEOs of the Fox Television Group. said in a statement. “’The Simpsons’ has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of Matt, Jim and Al. Congratulations to everyone who works on this groundbreaking series – from the voice cast and producers to the writers and production team – you comprise one of the greatest collections of creative talent in the history of the medium.

“And to the millions of ‘Simpsons’ fans around the world,” they continued, “thank you for watching all these years. We’re happy to tell you there’s lots more to come.”

Already the longest-running primetime scripted series on television, “The Simpsons” celebrated its milestone 600th episode last month with “Treehouse of Horror XXVIII.” Created by Matt Groening, the show has earned 32 Emmy Awards and 34 Annie Awards, and was the first animated series to win a prestigious Peabody Award.

“The Simpsons,” which airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox, kicked off its 28th season on Sept. 25.
