Anytime the terms, “the darkest film yet’, are uttered, the prospect for disappointment grows accordingly. The last run was arguably one of the worst runs every put to big screen. Like everyone else, I would love a good swan song. I am not over optimistic of this being achieved however. This being said, I will be sitting in the theater upon its release hoping to hell I am wrong;) REC

For 16 years, Hugh Jackman has been the face of Fox’s X-Men film franchise, appearing as Wolverine eight times in varying capacities. Whether he’s the star of the show or making a brief cameo, the fan-favorite actor has been the lone constant through all the ups and downs of the series. Sadly, the third solo Wolverine outing (due in 2017) seemingly marks the end of an era, as it is reportedly the final time Jackman will sport the claws of the world famous mutant.

Recently, it was confirmed that the film’s official title is Logan, with Jackman revealing a poster for the project on his Twitter. He seems to be quite fond of the artwork, since he’s now taken to social media to share another look at it as he walks through the streets of New York City.

On Twitter once again, Jackman posted a new picture of himself striking a pose in front of the Logan one-sheet on the corner of Bleecker and Lafayette streets in the Big Apple. Check it out below:

As sad as the thought of Jackman stepping away from his most iconic role is, there are still several reasons to be excited about Logan. Earlier this year, it came out that the film will be the first R-rated Wolverine adventure, a decision that was no doubt made easier following the record-breaking box office success of Deadpool. Unsurprisingly, Jackman has been enthusiastic about the latest film, saying that it will be “very different” from what’s come before. A script page shared on social media by director James Mangold certainly hinted at a change-of-pace, so hopefully Logan will be able to deliver the goods when it comes out next March.

Plot details have been kept under wraps as Fox plans out their marketing strategy, but some information is beginning to emerge. Word is now that Logan takes place in the year 2024 and features a Wolverine with diminishing regenerative abilities. He’s tasked with mentoring a young girl (most likely the child whose hand is in the poster), while a significantly older Professor X’s mind has started to deteriorate. If handled properly, this has the potential to make for compelling drama. Mangold is a director who made a name for himself with character pieces such as Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma, and The Wolverine (which Mangold also helmed) was well-received back in 2013. He should be a strong fit for this material, and by now it’s a given Jackman will deliver a captivating performance.

Jackman has mentioned that there will be more from Logan coming within the next week, with a trailer obviously being at the top of many fans’ wish lists. For years, moviegoers have wanted to see an unhinged Wolverine on the big screen, and even just a small taste of what R-rated X-Men looks like will be enough for now. If this is indeed to be Jackman’s swan song, there’s a lot of pressure to make Logan one of the great comic book films. Fortunately, the team understands this and they shouldn’t let viewers down.

Logan opens in U.S. theaters on March 3, 2017, followed by unannounced X-Men films on October 6, 2017, March 2, 2018, and June 29, 2018. Deadpool 2GambitNew Mutants and X-Force are currently in development.
