Suicide Squad Hits $700 Million at Global Box Office
Despite lukewarm reviews, “Suicide Squad” is still doing solidly at the box office, surpassing the $700 million worldwide mark in its sixth weekend in theaters.

Director David Ayer announced on Twitter this afternoon that the Warner Bros. film had reached the milestone, adding the hashtags “#humbled #nowords #thankyou.”

Starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jared Leto and Viola Davis, “Suicide Squad” opened domestically last month with a record-breaking $133.7 million before experiencing a 66-percent decline in its second weekend at the box office. That steep drop-off is in line with such superhero movies as “Green Lantern,” “Man of Steel” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” and only slightly better than “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

The film earned a 26 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, prompting some fans to start a petition to shut down the review aggregation site.

In its sixth weekend of release, “Suicide Squad” pulled in $10.1 million from 5,800 screens in 64 markets, including its debut in Japan.

Despite financial concerns due to its lack of distribution in China, the world’s second-largest film market, “Suicide Squad” has grossed $307.4 million overseas, including $43.3 million in the United Kingdom, $35.1 million in Brazil and $27.1 million in Mexico.
