Will we be getting a new Captain America in Infinity War?

We all knew it was coming, but it still pains me to write: Steve Rogers is, officially, no longer Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

You may have already gotten this in the not-so-subtle subtext of the ending of Captain America: Civil War, but it definitely wasn’t explicit. However, Joe and Anthony Russo — directors of both Civil War and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War — confirmed the shield-passing in an interview with the Huffington Post. Joe Russo confirmed:

“I think him dropping that shield [at the end of Civil War] is him letting go of that identity. [It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

Of course, we knew this moment was coming — we’ve even debated who might pick up the vibranium shield next. It helps that Steve will still be around for Infinity War. In fact, his presence in the fight against Thanos is one of the major reasons why he didn’t bite the bullet in Civil War (also, it would have been very sad).

Speaking to Huffington Post on the subject, Civil War screenwriter Christopher Markus said: “We kind of need [Steve Rogers]. There’s a big purple guy. He could be very helpful.”

I’ll leave you to decide if that means Steve will be dying in a future Avengers film — possibly Infinity War, perhaps in the realization of that premonition and/or nightmare of the future Tony saw in Age of Ultron. God, that’s a depressing thought. Hey, at least Steve will always be Captain America in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park
