Dwayne Johnson says that the forthcoming Jumanji movie is “a continuation” rather than a remake or reboot of the 90s original…

With such big-name revivals as Ghostbusters, Total Recall, and RoboCop receiving either online hostility or box office apathy, maybe it’s little surprise that the words ‘remake’ and ‘reboot’ are being treated with a hint of caution these days. Take the forthcoming Jumanji as an example: it’s a new version of a much-loved 1995 fantasy adventure starring the late Robin Williams, this time starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart.

Perhaps anticipating fan accusations that the new Jumanji (again based on the children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg) will ignore what came before, Johnson recently took to Instagram to confirm that the movie isn’t, in fact, a reboot.

“For the record, we are NOT making a reboot,” Johnson wrote, “but rather a continuation of an awesome Jumanji story.”

At this early stage, it isn’t clear how Sony’s new Jumanji will follow the events of the 1995 film, or whether it’ll match it in terms of sheer light-hearted entertainment. But with filming now wrapped on Fast 8 and Johnson embarking on the Jumanji shoot in two weeks, we’ll likely see and hear lots more from the production soon.

Jumanji‘s due out in July 2017.
