True Detective writer Nic Pizzolatto and Iron Man himself are attached to a rumored reboot of the CBS series Perry Mason at HBO.

True Detective may be in flux at HBO, but creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto has another project brewing with the network, and he’s teaming up with an Avenger.

Variety is reporting that Pizzolatto and Robert Downey Jr. are in talks to develop a project at HBO, with novelist Pizzolatto writing and Hollywood’s most bankable leading man, Downey Jr. set to star. There is no word yet on what the project is exactly, but sources are speculating that it could be a Perry Mason reboot.

Downey Jr. has been trying to develop a Perry Mason feature film at Warner Bros. for years, with Variety first reporting on the project in 2011. Originally running on CBS from 1957 to 1966, Perry Mason was a legal procedural starring Raymond Burr that had a long life running in syndication. The prospect of the film cooled off once Downey Jr.’s 2014 legal drama The Judge stalled at the box office.

Details are now emerging that Downey Jr. has shifted his vision to a series, with development talks starting between HBO and Downey Jr. and Pizzolatto around May. Downey Jr., his wife and producing partner, Susan Downey, of Team Downey and Pizzolatto will executive produce.

This will be Downey Jr.’s first television role since his stint on Ally McBeal ended with him being fired after an arrest in 2001. Pizzolatto’s last round of TV didn’t go so hot either; True Detective Season 2 was critically panned and became a pop culture punchline last year. However, both men are immensely talented, and one could easily imagine Downey Jr. working wonders with Pizzolatto’s dialogue.

We’ll have more details about the untitled Pizzolatto/Downey Jr. project as they emerge.
