When you look at the superhero movie landscape, it’s easy for a lot of critics (and some fans) to get jaded. The movie industry in general features “sequelitis” with sequels, remakes, reboots, and the ever-present “cinematic universe” buzzphrase being uttered from every film executive under the sun. It should be no surprise, then, that Deadpool 2 is coming to the rescue.

“I think Deadpool 2 will comment on anything that’s happening in movies today, especially in superhero movies,” producer Simon Kinberg said at the TCAs this year. The producer said it will specifically address “the sort of glut or saturation of these movies and the proliferation of sequels.” Yes, in a superhero sequel they’ll be addressing the overabundance of superhero sequels, like only Deadpool can.

Kinberg also said that Cable hasn’t been cast yet, and that the Gambit delays are partially due to trying to “find a very special and unique tone.” He does say they’re “really close right now” to a script on Gambit.

As for the TV side of the X-Men universe, Kinberg is very excited about Legion on FX, and says he and showrunner Noah Hawley are hoping for several years worth of stories in that series.

“In Legion, David, the main character, we’re talking a lot about how do we evolve him over multiple episodes, multiple seasons. [We’re] thinking years down the line ideally for his character,” Kinberg said. Hawley pitched the series to him during the Days of Future Past international press tour, as a “Breaking Bad in the superhero world.”

Legion debuts on FX early 2017. Deadpool 2 is planned for a January 12, 2018 release.
