Marvel Studios kept the surprise train rolling on Saturday evening during its pull-out-all-the-stops Comic-Con panel, giving the thousands of fans packed into Hall H a first look atSpider-Man: Homecoming, the Sony/Marvel team-up that is bringing Spidey home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The footage – from a movie that barely starting shooting a month ago — opens with yearbook photos of most of the Avengers, while stating, “Every story, every hero, has a beginning.” The last photo of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) dissolves into a shot of Peter in the halls of Midtown High School, and we follow him from 9:30 Science Class (where he manages to get a question right despite watching video of himself battling Giant Man on his laptop) to Women’s Studies – actually Peter and a buddy watching some girls walk by – to Web Design, where our young hero is busy mixing a new batch of webbing under the desk instead of learning html code.

It’s finally in Study Hall where his pager goes off and he announces he has to leave, only for the girl across from him (Zendaya) to ask just where he’s going and what he’s hiding. Cue a quick succession of images of Peter in full  superhero mode — jumping on a moving vehicle, scaling a wall, swinging into action – before she continues, “Forget it. I don’t care what you do.”

Oh yeah, there’s one last shot – of the Vulture, in high tech gear with mask, mechanical claws on his feet and jet propellers inside his wings – diving down toward the screen.

If this is going to be Marvel’s version of a high school comedy then it looks like they’re already nailing the tone. Director Jon Watts called it the “ground floor of the Marvel universe,” when he, Holland, Zendaya and several other cast members (no Michael Keaton, although he is now listed officially as playing the Vulture) trooped out to say hi before unspooling the footage.

It looks like a win to us, with a high school Spidey, the Vulture onscreen at last and the whole MCU now part of our hero’s world. Thanks to Marvel for giving us a glimpse this weekend.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover, Tony Revolori, Michael Keaton as the Vulture and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, opens July 7, 2017.
