Why Elizabeth Banks Wasn’t Mary Jane in Spider-Man

Believe it: the ageless actress was told she was “too old” to play Spider-Man’s girlfriend.

The odds weren’t always in favor of the actress who went on to make the Capitol’s best-dressed list as The Hunger GamesEffie Trinket. Elizabeth Banks was actually told she wasn’t young enough to play Spidey’s love interest in 2002’s Spider-Man.

At the age of 28, Banks was hardly any older than webslinger Tobey Maguire, but the Mary Jane Watson hopeful was cast in a supporting role because of her age. It was then-18-year-old Kirsten Dunst who ended up being romanced by Peter Parker.

Banks was baffled. “Tobey [Maguire] and I are basically the same age—and I was told I was too old to play her,” she confessed to Glamour UK. “I was like ‘Oh, okay, that’s what I’ve signed up for.” She must have meant that age discrimination is as Hollywood as little gold men and the red carpet, since studio execs apparently thought she was ancient compared to the teenage Dunst. The fact that the actress could still pass for a high school senior apparently didn’t enter their minds.

Movie matchmaking has lately been under fire for age discrimination—especially against women. It seems that the female paramours of male leads need to be at least a decade younger than their onscreen significant others. In the la-la-land of stardust and plastic surgery, big sunglasses and Botox, fame and facelifts, Banks is one of several actresses who have been raising their voices on the issue. Forever-flawless Olivia Wilde was turned away from The Wolf of Wall Street for being “too old”, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, who must have the secrets to the fountain of youth stashed in her night table drawer, has been rejected by casting directors more than once for the same reason.

“What I’m grateful for now is longevity,” Banks says in retrospect. “I was never a flavor of the month. I feel very comfortable that I will be working in this industry for a while.” Our Spidey senses tell us she won’t be going anywhere.
