Although “X-Men: Apocalypse” took a tumble in its second weekend at the North American box office, earning just $22.32 million, the Fox sequel topped the charts overseas.

That’s thanks in large part to the Bryan Singer film’s $59 million debut in China, the second-highest opening weekend ever there for the studio. Deadline notes that’s 62 percent bigger than 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” and 7 percent more than “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

“Apocalypse” earned $84.4 million in its third weekend overseas, bringing its international total to $286 million.

In North America, “Apocalypse” has grossed just north of $116 million since its May 27 premiere, bringing its worldwide tally to $402.5 million.

Forbes reports that its $22.32 million second weekend is the second-lowest for any film in the Fox franchise, just skating by the $21.3 million earned by “The Wolverine” in 2013.
